A woman I want to be like.....

On this day of Women's History month I would like to draw attention to the beautiful Nobel Prize winning author, Toni Morrison. I was introduced to Miss. Morrison by my aunt; who at the time was reading Beloved. She gave me the book after she finished and if had a profound affect on me. Never had I read something so haunting but so beautifully written. It remains one of my favorite books. Some of her other works in include The Bluest Eye, Tar Baby, Home, and God Bless the Child. Morrison is not only an accomplished author but a civil rights activists and she is has even lead discussions on the importance of fighting against censorship. For more information one her and her books visit tonimorrisonsociety.org

Here are just a few of the Quotes by Morrison that I love:

Banned Book Quote of the Day!

This lovely quote is from Beloved By Toni Morrison

Banned Book of the Day

Banned Book of the Day; Beloved by Toni Morrison. It has been challenged for “sexual material”, “violence”, and “inappropriate topics”.

Here is the synopsis:
Staring unflinchingly into the abyss of slavery, this spellbinding novel transforms history into a story as powerful as Exodus and as intimate as a lullaby.

Sethe was born a slave and escaped to Ohio, but eighteen years later she is still not free. She has too many memories of Sweet Home, the beautiful farm where so many hideous things happened. Her new home is haunted by the ghost of her baby, who died nameless and whose tombstone is engraved with a single word: Beloved.

Have you read this book? If so, please share your thoughts in the comment section of this post!

Toni Morrison Anniversay!

21 years ago today Author Toni Morrison became the first African American woman to win a Noble Prize for Literature. According to the Nobel committee she won because her "novels characterized by visionary force and poetic import, gives life to an essential aspect of American reality"! Hats off to Ms. Morrison who continues to be a living declaration that words can free not only the writer but also the reader! #authorswelove #tonimorrison #books

Book We Love

Beloved by Toni Morrison

Here is the synopsis:
Staring unflinchingly into the abyss of slavery, this spellbinding novel transforms history into a story as powerful as Exodus and as intimate as a lullaby. Sethe, its protagonist, was born a slave and escaped to Ohio, but eighteen years later she is still not free. She has too many memories of Sweet Home, the beautiful farm where so many hideous things happened. And Sethe’s new home is haunted by the ghost of her baby, who died nameless and whose tombstone is engraved with a single word: Beloved. Filled with bitter poetry and suspense as taut as a rope, Beloved is a towering achievement.
